Despite a 12 month delay caused by COVID-19, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games officially begin today, with the Opening Ceremony scheduled to commence at 9pm.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Central Coast and Member for Terrigal Adam Crouch said nine Central Coast locals have been selected for the Australian Olympic Team.

“It’s the honour of a lifetime to represent your State or nation on the international stage and I congratulate these nine local athletes from the Central Coast for reaching the highest level of sporting competition,” Mr Crouch said.

“This cohort of Olympians is particularly special because they have defied a pandemic to represent our nation on the world stage.

“Participating in the Olympics isn’t just about the medals. Every single athlete that has been selected to join the Australian Olympic Team has worked so hard to reach this point and should feel enormous pride in what they’ve already achieved.

“I also want to recognise Dylan Littlehales, Riley Fitzsimmons and Matt Dawson who made their Olympic debut at Rio de Janeiro in 2016, and have now been selected for a second time.

“Our entire Central Coast community will be cheering on each of our nine local athletes during the next 17 days of competition.”
