Member for Terrigal Adam Crouch is backing Empire Bay Fishing Club’s call for the Minns Labor Government to pause and extend consultation on the draft NSW Snapper and Yellowtail Kingfish Harvest Strategies.
Mr Crouch said local recreational fishers deserved sufficient time to understand the proposals, examine the supporting science and provide informed feedback.
“These strategies could shape recreational fishing in NSW for years to come, and our local fishos deserve a meaningful opportunity to have their say,” Mr Crouch said.
“Empire Bay Fishing Club has raised reasonable concerns about the time available to review complex scientific assessments, consult its members and ask questions before submissions close.
“I am calling on the Minns Labor Government to extend consultation, clearly explain the science and give fishing clubs direct access to NSW Fisheries scientists for answers.”
An Empire Bay Fishing Club spokesperson said members supported sustainable fisheries management and wanted greater transparency around the data and modelling underpinning the strategies.
“Our members want healthy fish stocks for future generations. We also need to understand how these assessments account for fish movement, environmental conditions and regional differences,” the spokesperson said.
“Genuine consultation means having time to ask questions, receive meaningful answers and discuss that information with our members.
Mr Crouch said he would continue advocating for Empire Bay Fishing Club and fishers across the Terrigal electorate.
“Our fishing clubs bring valuable local knowledge and experience. Their concerns must be heard and properly considered before these strategies are finalised,” Mr Crouch said.
