Member for Terrigal Adam Crouch has welcomed the completion of long-awaited upgrades to the Copacabana Surf Life Saving Club, saying the project is a major win for the club, its volunteers and the wider community.
Mr Crouch said the improved facilities, which include a state-of-the-art first aid room and an upgraded kiosk area, will strengthen the club’s ability to support local surf lifesavers and enhance safety outcomes for beachgoers at Copacabana.
“Copacabana Surf Life Saving Club plays a vital role in keeping our community safe, and these upgrades will ensure volunteers have the facilities they need to continue their important work,” Mr Crouch said at the official opening on Sunday.
Funding for the project was at risk of being withdrawn by the Minns Labor Government; however, it was ultimately secured following a strong community campaign led by the club, with support from Mr Crouch and Shadow Minister for Sport, Eleni Petinos.
Mr Crouch acknowledged the dedication of Club President Tom Tseng for his vital role in advocating on behalf of the club to secure the funding, which was awarded by the former Liberal-National Government as part of the 2022/23 Surf Club Facility Program.
“This outcome shows what can be achieved when a community comes together to support its local club, and I want to acknowledge the strong advocacy and work of Club President Tom Tseng in fighting for this funding,” Mr Crouch said.
Mr Tseng said he was pleased that Stage 1 of the building works had been completed and that the upgrades would significantly enhance the club’s operations.
“The increased size of the First Aid Room will enable us to provide improved and immediate first aid to beachgoers who may unfortunately be injured at our beach, while the upgraded kiosk area will allow for expanded meal options for beachgoers and the local community,” Mr Tseng said.
“After receiving a grant from the Office of Sport in 2023, the completion of the building works was delayed due to increased building material costs, requests from Council to postpone the start of works until after the surf lifesaving season, and State Government threats to withdraw funding due to delays in commencing the project.
“However, we were able to overcome these setbacks, and we now have a great facility that will help support beachgoers and volunteers.”
