The Central Coast Marine Discovery Centre will soon re-open to the public, following a $1 million redevelopment funded by the NSW Government.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Regional NSW John Barilaro said Central Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located at Terrigal, undertakes important tourism and research functions.
“We’re pleased the NSW Government has been able to support this important tourism asset and education centre on the Central Coast,” Mr Barilaro said.
“The $1 million redevelopment means a new and improved tourism experience for locals and visitors with improved facilities, new services and equipment.
“The grant has also unlocked the opportunity for the Centre to provide education and research opportunities for schools and universities, both locally and Australia-wide.”
Parliamentary Secretary for the Central Coast and Member for Terrigal Adam Crouch said the redevelopment included upgrades to the aquariums, building and café deck extensions, a new kitchen and amenities, installation of air conditioning and solar power, rainwater and sewerage upgrades, improved parking and signage, and a new access ramp.
“Part of the funding also enabled an educational video to be created and shown at the Centre, titled Wonders of the Wreck, which is a documentary detailing the sinking of Ex-HMAS Adelaide for an artificial reef,” Mr Crouch said.
“A live video stream from a web cam on the Ex-HMAS Adelaide allows the beautiful underwater landscape to be viewed from the Centre and online.
“This redevelopment also means that Central Coast Marine Discovery Centre now qualifies for eco-tourism accreditation, which enhances our wider community’s ability to attract environmental research and education opportunities.”
The Central Coast Marine Discovery Centre is the recipient of $1 million from the NSW Government’s Regional Growth Environment and Tourism Fund, which aims to increase tourism and job opportunities in regional NSW. The Centre also contributed $106,000 towards the redevelopment.
