The NSW Government has been put on notice over the decline of obstetric and maternity services on the Central Coast, following calls for action from Shadow Minister for the Central Coast Adam Crouch.
Speaking during a Public Interest Debate in the NSW Parliament, Mr. Crouch urged the Minns Labor Government to take immediate steps to address the deterioration of rural and regional maternity services across the state.
“This issue is close to the heart of every parent in our region. Since the announced closure of Gosford Private Hospital’s maternity ward, families have been left uncertain about their future – and rightfully so,” Mr. Crouch said.
“It’s unacceptable that a region with a population of over 350,000 will be left with only one maternity ward to service the entire region.”
“Every family, regardless of where they live, deserves equitable access to obstetric and maternity care.
“This is why I spoke in support of the independent Member for Wagga Wagga Dr. Joe McGirr’s Public Interest Debate, which calls on the Minns Labor Government to deliver a regional obstetrics action plan before the end of this year.”
Despite the challenges facing the region, Mr. Crouch commended the Central Coast Local Health District (CCLHD) for their work in response to the crisis.
“I extend my thanks to the dedicated staff and the Acting Chief Executive of our Local Health District for their efforts in supporting expectant mothers,” Mr. Crouch said.
“CCLHD are finalising full-time specialist positions for their Obstetrics and Gynaecology medical workforce while also developing a pilot program for a private-in-public birthing model, ensuring options are there for our local families in spite of the closure.”
