Community Called To Sign Wyong Palliative Care Petition

15 Jun 2022 health

There could be no more important investment for a Government than in quality of life and in ensuring dignity and care for those approaching the end of their life.

On Thursday 16 July 2020, I was proud to join the team from Elsie's Retreat committee to announce that for the first time in the history of the Central Coast our region would have its own palliative care unit.

The hardworking Elsie's Retreat committee, Judy Maudsley, Margaret Pearce, Oana McBride, Peter Hurley, and the rest of the orange army spent close to 10 years working tirelessly to improve palliative care options on the Central Coast.

In April 2021 their dream became a reality when we officially opened the 10‑bed palliative care unit at Gosford Hospital.

The new facility provides a high level of care that could not be provided at home for patients who would benefit from a caring team in homely comforts. The unit is staffed with a 20‑strong team within the Gosford Hospital campus so that patients have access to specialist medical, nursing, and allied health services.

Since the opening of the palliative care unit, it has already provided a sanctuary for hundreds of people who have been cared for as inpatients.

The Orange Army are not stopping at Gosford, the NSW Government recently announced a record $743 million investment in palliative care - a commitment to ensuring our state has the best palliative care support services in the country, just like the one in Gosford Hospital.

It is an honour to support the Elsie's Retreat committee in lobbying the Minister for Regional Health, the Hon. Bronnie Taylor for a Palliative Care Unit at Wyong Hospital.

We can't do it alone; we need your help.

Please sign my petition, ready for me to present to the Minister in September 2022, for a dedicated Palliative Care Unit at Wyong Hospital.

This is an investment in quality of life, in dignity - the dignity of our loved ones, and everyone in our region.
